As the summer sun shines brightly, it’s essential to be aware of how certain medications can impact your body’s ability to regulate temperature. Some prescription drugs and over-the-counter supplements can increase your risk of heat-related illnesses. These include antibiotics like doxycycline and ciprofloxacin, which are notorious for sun sensitivity. Additionally, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen can also make your skin more vulnerable to the sun. Isotretinoin (Accutane), often used for severe acne, is another culprit. Thiazide diuretics and methotrexate are common prescriptions that can heighten your risk.

Remember to stay hydrated, seek shade, and apply sunscreen when spending time outdoors. If you experience symptoms like muscle cramps, headache, or excessive sweating, take action promptly. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, a medical emergency characterized by hot, dry skin, rapid heart rate, and confusion. If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately and help the person cool down by moving them to a cooler place and applying cold cloths or ice. Let’s enjoy the summer safely!
